Having recently bought a Jap spec 95' ST205 GT4 I found that theFint å ha i forumet som referanse som er søkbar
performance was not what was expected, it was also hesitant and
wouldnt really pull below 4000rpm.
After asking round many "Experts" as to what could be the cause it
was narrowed down to either of two things. The Timing or a blocked
cat.
The temperature of the exhust and engine and "low boost" seemed to
indicate blocked cat.
A trip to a local GT4 "expert" and they confirmed to us that the
timing was fine.
When we started looking into it we found that when checking the
timing the car has to be running in diagnostics mode (bridge
terminals TE1 and E1 in the diagnostics), which drops the idle to
700rpm amongst other things. You will find that the engine warning
light will be flashing on the dash now, if it isnt a constant rate
flashing then it is reporting an error. I dont have a list of errors
to hand, but if its giving an error find that out first and resolve
it or everything is gonna be out of kilter (we are dealing with a
very smart and protective ECU).
What if the "experts" didnt know this. It appears they didnt. With
a simple timing gun we checked the timing in diagnostics mode, it
was at 0d BTDC, it should be 10d on a standard car (about 14d in non-
diagnostics mode). Bear in mind that this is 10d BTDC for 100ron
Jap fuel. You may need to retard for lower grade fuels. So we set
the timing to 10d BTDC in diagnostics and we now have a completely
differnt very fast car.
But how do i adjust the timing i hear you cry!,
Down the left hand side of the engine is a load of pullys and
flywheels ETC, at the bottom you will see some markings on the
engine (a 10 and a 0 and other intermediate markers). The flywheel
has a mark on it, roll the car back and keep bringing the clutch up
in second until the mark on the flywheel is visible and put some
white paint on it (in the grove).
OK top right hand cornber of engine you ill find the distributor cap
(the thing with 5 HT leads coming out of it!) Below and to the left
of the dizzy cap you will find two 14mm nuts which when loosened
will alow the dizzy to rotate. Clockwise to go higher.
Hook up your timing gun to cylinder 1 and run the car in diagnostics
mode. Now rotate the dizzy cap clockwise until the timing mark comes
to 10d.
Tighten dizzy cap backup.
Probably best to now reset ECU, disconnect negative battery terminal
for 10 mins.
Hopefully you've now got a sorted engine, and thanks to all who sent
me advice.
Hope this helps.
